How to Align Your Garage Door Sensors

Garage door sensors must be in sync to work properly. One sensor sends the signal to the opposite sensor to operate accurately. The emitter shows a green light and the receiver flashes the yellow light to confirm the information. If your garage door sensors are not working this way, you need to adjust them for proper functionality.

1. Turn off the Sensors by Disconnecting the Power Supply to Your Garage

Make sure to turn off the power button before pulling out the plug from your automatic opener. You will find the fuse in the breaker box. For extra safety, you can wear electricity-resistant gloves.

2. Loosen the Screws Holding the Sensors in Place

Loosen the screw in the mounting brackets, but you don’t need to remove them completely. Loosen just enough so that you can move the sensors. Test it by sliding the mounting brackets up and down. They should be able to slide with ease.

3. Slide Each Garage Door Sensor Down

Make sure to slide each garage door sensor down. See how low they can go without the screw getting loose. Use your hands to do this. Avoid using any tools as they can damage or malfunction the sensors.

4. Attach a String Between the Sensors

When the sensors and mounting brackets are low, get a string that is longer than the width of your garage opening. Now, tie one end of the string to the sensor and its mounting bracket tightly. Then, stretch the string across the garage to the other sensor and tie the other end to that sensor.

5. Ensure the String Lays Level

Place a level under the string to make sure it is straight. If the string isn’t level, adjust the mounting brackets until the string runs evenly from one end of the garage door to the other.

6. Tighten the Screws in Place

Once you know that the line is level and even, tighten the screws in the brackets. To test whether they are tight enough or not, move the garage door sensors out of place. The screws are tight if they don’t move. In case, they move, level the string once more and tighten them again.

7. Remove the String and Reconnect the Power

When you are sure that the sensors are perfectly aligned, remove the string. Now power your garage to test the sensors again. Once the sensors are perfectly aligned, the garage door will function accurately.

Aligning your garage sensors can be time-consuming, so it is advisable to consult a garage door expert for the job. At York Garage Door Guys, we can handle all your garage door queries.
